VLC (Video lan connect player) is a great free opensource software. VLC has a built in dvd decoder and can play pretty much any media file. Some formats it can play: MOV WMV AVI DVD MPEG MP4 VOB 3GP MPG. When Windows Media player doesn't work, use VLC. I highly recommend VLC over any other media player. Vlc: xvideo output not working on powerbook (radeon video card, powerpc). 1.1.12-1 Followup-For: Bug #604687 Hi, I've an iBook G4 (PowerPC) with a Redeon card. VLC 0.8.4a for OS 10.2 will not install on my ice iBook G3 500 dual USB with firewire. I placed the 'cone' in the Applications folder, selected the cone and used 'file' to open. The cone bounces in the menu but stops and the application does not open. I am using an Apple 16x Pioneer external DVD Superdrive with proper drivers. I believe that's version 1.1.12 while 1.1.13 which is a universal binary can be found at the Powerbook page which I mentioned earlier (Go to the section named 'For PowerBook & iBook G4 and MacBooks' right after the introduction. You'll find the links among the text under 'Before you go further'). But be warned, a g4 WILL NOT play HD content, not even 720p. It barely even tries to keep up. I tried quicktime, front row, and VLC, with a few different HD videos. None were watchable. SD videos are fine, and my main use, music, works fine as well.

I also tried installing this same VLC app on my G4 Sawtooth in OS 10.2 with the same results. Am I missing some simple step here?? I wonder if I installed an internal Apple Superdrive (this model iBook will accept one) if this would allow VLC to open? Since I haven't seen others with this concern, I am thinking this is an operator problem. I would like to be able to play DVDs. The DVD drive is working fine for reading and burning but not playing.Devices and Mac OS X version
